I sure would not want to have to lift this assembly up by hand and try lining up the dowl pins and pinion shaft. I haven't had to remove an axle housing but seems like an over-head hoist would be handy and maybe almost neceaasry. Well, for one reason or another it's basically the same procedure as you're doing and not a very pleasant one. I look at an exploded diagram in my parts manual and think 'Aha that's like I remember, the seal is under a bearing retainer that is removable from the outside.' Then, I look at the repair manual and see the cruncher note that says 'axle must be pressed out the housing to service the oil seal.' I got curious about the procedure needed for my 1710. Unbolt hydraulic high pressure line under seat. Remove fender.Remove brake drum and shoes. Combined Decelerator/Brake Pedal Selectable reverse speed ratios 100, 115, 130 or independent of forward ground speed Electronic Control with Automatic Transmission Protection Double Reduction Final Drives with Wet Multi-Disk Brakes. I was also worried about the problem you mentioned. ![]() The other problem I had was the rusting of the cam lobe on the brake accuatior arm. I had trouble keeping the brakes on the tractor. I ran into the same problems with my 750, which is designed the same. Don't know if something like that may be a solution or at least a stopgap measure. I don't know what kind of hydraulic oil is used but I have a vague recollection that synthetics are more prone to leaking. You probably are a pretty calm person because I'd likely have considerably more to vent. No question here I just needed to vent.!! So what should be a fast easy seal change now requires pulling the entire final drive system, the drive gear and pinion to get at the seal. The pinion seal in the final drives that the drum runs off of is leaking.īut it looks like the seal is pressed in from the inside of the housing with a snap ring inside. ![]() ![]() I take off the drums and the shoes look good but the drums and shoes are oil soaked. ![]() If you are interested in any other models of John Deere Service Manual click here.My John Deere 850 has dry drum brakes which have not been working well.
